My Story and Experiences
I picked this model up at my local Home Depot after doing a bit of research online. It was needed to replace my old Badger 1, which lasted over 13 years. One of the main reasons I chose to go with the InSinkErator brand again was to make installation as simple as possible, and for the most part, it did. On my end, all I needed to install it was a few wire nuts, a couple of screwdrivers, wire cutters, and a hammer. All of the hardware and gaskets that I needed were provided by InSinkErator.
In my estimation, I saved about $100.00 by doing it myself; however, it should be noted that the Badger 500 doesn’t come with an included power cord. If you have a power outlet present, you’ll need to buy the cord separately. Even though the cord isn’t expensive, it would be nice if it was included.
Now that it’s been installed and used a few times, there are a few things I like and don’t like about this unit. It is a continuous feed model, and because it has a ½ HP motor, it can handle the needs of a 4 to 6 person sized household. The grinding chamber has a max capacity of 26 ounces, and at top speed, the motor will reach 1,725 rotations per minute. This makes it powerful enough to liquefy some of the more difficult food groups. There is a manual reset overload option for the motor’s protection, and the unit does have a dishwasher drain connection option.
The manufacturer’s warranty that InSinkErator offers is pretty great. For the next two years, should the unit stop working because of a defect in the parts or the craftsmanship, InSinkErator will send a specially trained technician to my home to repair or replace it for free. The idea of not having to remove it myself and send it off to some repair center is fantastic.
With all that said, the one thing I do not like about the Badger 500 is the fact that it was built without using any sound dampening or noise insulation materials. Depending on what it’s grinding, this thing can get loud! Since we don’t run it but for a minute or two at a time, the noise level is tolerable, but the first few times we turned it on, it sent our dog running for the hills.
The InSinkErator Badger 500 ½ HP Continuous Feed Garbage Disposal is well-priced and has an excellent warranty service program. Given how long our old Badger model worked, we expect to enjoy many years of service from this one. We would definitely recommend this model to anyone looking for a new garbage disposal.
