My Story and Experiences with the Waste King Legend 9980
Recently, I purchased my own home. It was a proud moment, but in the normal course of events, it wasn’t two weeks after I received my keys that the kitchen garbage disposal went out. It was a rude awakening when I realized that there wasn’t a supervisor I could call to fix it for me. I was on my own.
Waste King 9980 Installation
Fortunately, I have a friend who is a plumber, and he recommended the Waste King brand to me. Although he offered to install a new one for me, I wanted to try it on my own. It was surprisingly easy! This garbage disposal is made in the United States, and when you hold the product in your hand, it feels solid and well-made. It has a 90-degree angled “elbow” on the side of the unit, and that’s what hooks directly into the waste line.
The Waste King 9980 also has a three bolt connection that creates a tight wedge between the upper part of the disposer and the bottom of the sink. The installation guide was easy to read and offered complete step by step instructions. Overall, it took me just a little over an hour to install this by myself, and that was with no prior plumbing experience! However, if you are doing it by yourself, I would recommend using a scissor jack to prop the disposal up while you are hooking up the connection. It will save you a lot of frustration.
Waste King Garbage Disposer Impression
So far, I’m really pleased with this garbage disposal. With its high-speed motor, it offers sufficient grinding power to take down stringy foods and even small animal bones. Because all its parts are treated with an anti-rust component, I know I don’t have to worry about that, and I’m fairly confident that this model is going to last a while. One thing I have noticed is that you have to feed food waste into slowly in order to avoid jams and clogs. I’m unsure if this is normal with most garbage disposals, but it does help reduce the chances of developing a clog.
When it comes to noise, the Waste King 9980 is relatively quiet. Even though its design includes sound insulation, it makes a fair bit of noise when grinding tougher food waste, like bones or fibrous foods. That said, I think the noise level is reasonable when you consider what it is capable of grinding. The larger amount of waste it is grinding, the noisier it tends to be. When you first flip the switch on, you’ll hear a loud click as the motor engages for the first time. If you are sensitive to noise, then you might find this annoying.
When I was reading reviews about the Waste King 9980, I did notice that a few consumers had complaints about the product clogging when food debris got caught up on the center of the cutting wheel. When this happened, the disposer had to be turned off and manually unclogged; however, I have yet to experience any of this trouble. All in all, I think this disposer is a sound investment.

Final Review of Waste King 9980 Legend Series Garbage Disposer
With the amount of power and grinding capabilities the Waste King 9980 has to offer, it’s an excellent value. It’s not necessarily the best model you can buy, but for the budget conscious homeowner, it will save a few dollars. You will have to compromise and adjust to the amount of noise it produces, and it does seem prone to occasional clogs. The things I like about it most include its lifetime warranty against corrosion and defects, the included 36 inch power cord, and its stainless steel construction. I would buy this model again.
